Windows PAR Desktop Setup Create Desktop Icons: 1. Open Windows Explorer (click Start, Programs, Windows Explorer (or Accessories and Windows Explorer) and make sure it doesn't cover the whole screen - if it does click the middle button at the top right of the screen - i.e. the square with 2 overlapping squares in it. The Windows desktop should be visible as a background. 2. On the left side of Windows Explorer, click the plus sign next to My Computer and the Local C Drive icon to display its directories or folders. If a minus sign is displayed, the drive is already open. 3. Find the PAR folder and click it once to open it. The PAR contents should now be displayed on the right side of the screen. To view as a list, rather than a group of icons, click the View Menu at the top and choose Details. 4. Find the PAR.EXE icon (if the DOS extensions, i.e. the '.EXE' are not shown, open the View menu at the top of the screen and choose Options, then uncheck the Hide extensions box - the wording may vary with the Windows version). The PAR.EXE file has an icon which is a white square with a blue border. Click the icon with the RIGHT mouse button - this will open a menu - choose Create Shortcut. This will make a Shortcut to PAR icon at the end of the listing on the right side of the screen. 5. Drag the shortcut icon (not the PAR icon) onto the desktop and drop it (put the mouse arrow on the shortcut icon, press and hold the left mouse button and move the shortcut to the desktop and release the left mouse button). 6. Now create a shortcut to either PARINET.EXE (if submitting to the Teleplan web site) or SUBMIT.BAT (if using the old Simpc Teleplan program). Again, click with right mouse button, choose create shortcut and drag the shortcut to the desktop. 7. Similarly, create a shortcut to PARBACK.BAT, right click, create shortcut and drag to desktop. 8. Close Windows Explorer. 9. Click the Shortcut to PAR icon with the RIGHT mouse button and choose Properties. Click the Program tab at the top of the Properties box and put a check in the Close on Exit box. If you would like the program to capitalize the patient's surname and first letters of the given name(s), add the word CAPS to the end of the command line (leave a space between the par.exe and caps). 10. Click the Change Icon button and click the Medical Bag icon (about 2/3rd to the right) and click OK. 11. Click the Screen tab at the top and check the box that says Run Full Screen and click OK. 12. Right click the Shortcut to ParInet (or Submit.bat) icon and select Properties. Click the Change Icon button and type pifmgr.dll in the 'Look for Icons In:' box. 13. Right click the Shortcut to Parback.bat icon and select Properties. Repeat the previous step to set up a Backup PAR icon. 14. Icons can be renamed by right clicking and choosing Rename. Usually the icons are called PAR, Submit MSP and Backup PAR. Windows Notes: 1. To run PAR in full screen mode under XP, double click the Par Icon to bring up the password screen. Don't enter the password. Type Alt/Enter to put the password screen into a Window. Right click the title bar of the window and click Properities. Click the Layout tab and set each to the 2 buffers sizes to 80 x 25. Click OK and choose the Save for future windows option. Press Escape a few times to return to the desktop. Par should now run full screen. 2. When running any program in Windows, you may find yourself dumped out of the program back to the Desktop. This may happen if you accidentally hit the Windows Key on the bottom row on the keyboard, or if you type the ALT/TAB or CTRL/TAB combinations. If this happens, check the Task Bar at the bottom of your screen for an icon representing your program (in this case, PAR). To get back into your program, click the Task Bar icon (clicking the Par icon will start a second copy of PAR). 3. Before submitting accounts to MSP by clicking the Submit icon, make sure that the PAR program is not running, i.e. you should exit the program by returning to System. Any account that is currently in use by PAR will not be accessible to the Submission program and the submission process may be prematurely terminated. 4. Before shutting down the computer, make sure that any running programs have be properly terminated or closed, otherwise, data may not get written back to the hard drive. Always shutdown by clicking Start and Shutdown - never just turn the power off.
